The story
On the Timmelsjoch you drive from one Tyrol into the other. From Sölden the road climbs through the upper Ötztal to the border at 2,474 metres, Austria's highest road border crossing. The Austrian ramp opened in 1959 as a private toll road; the Italian side, down to the Passeier valley, is older. It was begun in the 1930s as a military road and reaches gradients of 14 per cent. You feel the difference between the two halves in every bend. The pass opens only from early summer to autumn, and only by day. Made for anyone who likes a border crossing they have to earn.
