The story
The Penser Joch feels like a secret South Tyrol would rather keep to itself. From Sterzing it is about seventeen kilometres up to 2,211 metres, the highest point of the road between Sterzing and Bolzano. Then comes a long, unhurried descent through the Sarntal, a valley of farmsteads and forests, until you roll into Sarnthein. The road was built in the 1930s for military reasons and has ramps of up to 13 per cent. Closed in winter, it is a pass for summer and autumn days in the Sarntal Alps. A fine piece above the desk of anyone who loves the quiet side of the mountains.
