The story
The Brenner is not a pass of hairpins but of history. Since Roman times traders, armies and travellers have crossed the Alps here, because at 1,370 metres it is one of the lowest crossings of the main Alpine ridge. Between Innsbruck and Sterzing the old pass road follows the Wipptal through villages such as Matrei and Gries, while motorway traffic thunders past alongside. At the Austrian–Italian border the watershed feels almost unremarkable, which is exactly why this route has mattered for two millennia. Deep below, the Brenner Base Tunnel is being dug. A fitting piece for a hallway, where every trip south begins.
