The story
Few stages start like this one: on the cobbled market square of Mesen, Belgium's smallest city, with a lap of the square before the cars head out of town. From there the road drops gently off the ridge through the lanes of Heuvelland towards Hollebeke, where a hairpin at a junction sends the stage doubling back, before the flying finish on the road to Wijtschate. These 13.8 kilometres cross the ground fought over in the 1917 Battle of Messines, now farmland and quiet villages, on the roads of a rally first held in 1965. For lovers of West Flanders, its history and its rallying.
