The story
On 11 and 12 July 1904 the first cars raced up this mountain against the clock, and the event is described as the oldest auto race in the United States. The road is older still: it opened as a carriage road in 1861 and remains a private toll road. Over 7.6 miles (12.2 km) and well over 150 turns, it averages about 12 % up to the 6,288 ft summit, the highest in the northeastern United States, and the last pitch hits 22 %. The final gravel section was paved after 2021, so 2026 was the first race on a fully paved course. For anyone who likes their climbs steep.
