Elevation profile
The story
The start line at Mile 7 already sits at 2862 m, higher than most Alpine passes, and the road still has 1440 m to climb. Over 19.99 km and 156 turns, the course winds up through pine forest, breaks out above the tree line and finishes on the bare summit of Pikes Peak at 4302 m, where the thin air saps power from engine and driver. Drivers have raced up this highway since 1916. For decades much of the course was gravel; only in August 2011 was the whole road paved. For the fan who follows the race to the summit turn by turn.
