The story
The Nockberge don't do drama. Instead of jagged rock you get rounded, grassy summits rolling away in every direction, and the Nockalmstraße threads through them. Over 35 kilometres between Innerkrems and Ebene Reichenau it packs in 52 hairpins, gradients of up to 12 percent and two high points above 2,000 metres, the Eisentalhöhe and the Schiestelscharte. Opened as a toll road in 1981 and driveable from May to October, it is a road for unhurried days: windows down, pastures on both sides, stopping whenever the view demands it. Made for the study wall of anyone who measures a trip in bends rather than minutes.
