The story
If the big-name passes feel like a queue, head for the Sölkpass. Linking Stein an der Enns with Schöder, it runs 40 kilometres through the quiet Sölk valleys of the Niedere Tauern, inside a nature park where oncoming traffic is the exception. The road tops out at 1,788 metres, and the southern ramp reaches 15 percent. From the highest hairpin on the northern side you can still pick out the medieval mule track that crossed here long before asphalt. The pass isn't cleared in winter, so the season runs roughly from mid-May to October. For lovers of empty roads, above the desk, where daydreams start.
