Elevation profile
The story
Fifty numbered hairpins, each with a sign giving your altitude: on the Vršič you always know exactly where you are. From Kranjska Gora you count 24 on the way up, partly on cobblestones. Russian prisoners of war built the road in 1915 and 1916, and a small wooden Russian Chapel remembers the victims of an avalanche in 1916. At 1,611 metres you top out on Slovenia's highest road pass, deep in Triglav National Park. On the south side you count down another 26 to Trenta and the emerald Soča valley. For anyone who has lost their heart to the Julian Alps.
