Elevation profile
The story
Turracher Höhe is less about altitude than about attitude. From Predlitz in Styria or Ebene Reichenau in Carinthia, the road hauls itself up gradients of up to 23 percent to a high plateau with a lake and a small resort on its shore. It used to be fiercer still: before the road was realigned it reached 34 percent and was, for a time, the steepest alpine road in Europe. Its 29 kilometres mix forest, short brutal ramps and the open summit plateau, and it is kept open all year. For the hallway or garage of anyone who loves a climb that makes the engine work.
