The story
Just south of Kuala Lumpur, near the airport, Sepang was carved out of tropical lowland in 1999. The 5.543-kilometre lap is wide and fast, with two long straights joined by a tight hairpin, so the main grandstand overlooks both. Heat and humidity drain drivers and riders alike, and an afternoon storm can flood the track in minutes. It hosted the Grand Prix until 2017 and has long welcomed motorcycle racing too. Hang it for the fan who once set an early alarm for the race from Malaysia.
