The story
For cyclists it is almost a pilgrimage, yet by car or motorbike the Tourmalet is every bit as much a classic. From Luz-Saint-Sauveur you climb via Barèges into a wide, bare valley, on gradients of up to about 10 per cent. At 2,115 metres you reach the col, one of the highest paved passes in the French Pyrenees, with the observatory on the Pic du Midi watching from above. To the east you descend past the ski resort of La Mongie to Sainte-Marie-de-Campan. The big cycling races turned it into a legend. A map for those who have conquered it, or still plan to.
