The story
The best moment on the Giau comes when the trees run out. From Selva di Cadore the road works hard for about ten kilometres, through 29 hairpins and three avalanche tunnels, and then suddenly you are out on an open alpine meadow at 2,236 metres. The rock towers of Nuvolau and Averau rise straight above the summit, grey against the sky. The descent to Cortina d'Ampezzo is longer, with Dolomite peaks on every side. And since the pass stays open all year, weather permitting, there is no wrong season to return. Made for a wall you walk past every day.
