The story

The Transalpina is the highest road in Romania, and it never lets you forget it. From Novaci a run of hairpins lifts you to Rânca, then the trees fall away and the road seems to float along the ridges of the Parâng Mountains. For roughly twenty kilometres you drive above 2,000 metres, with nothing but wide, rolling crests in every direction. At the Urdele Pass you reach the top at 2,145 metres. After that comes a long, unhurried descent through forest and quiet valleys to Sebeș. For anyone who likes the sky at eye level.
